I, April Preston, am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Washington DC area who earned my master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Saint Mary's University in Minneapolis, MN. I specialize in systems and family dynamics and have a strong love for community and cultural matters. My belief is that clients are experts in their own lives and it is my responsibility as a therapist to follow my clients' pace on their journey toward wellness. My goals are to assist clients in Reflecting upon life choices and experiences that have caused emotional wounds, supporting clients in Releasing pain associated with emotional scars, and providing a safe space for Restoration. Therefore, I founded Kovu (i.e., pronounced ko-voo and means 'scar' in Swahili) Healing as a place for scars to heal.
Kovu Healing is a premier therapy and consulting service in the Washington DC metro area. At Kovu Healing, we provide services geared toward healing emotional scars. We offer a safe space for clients to explore life challenges without judgment. Kovu Healing aspires to de-stigmatize psychotherapy while providing education on mental health and wellness. We have three core beliefs: 1) Connection is vital to the human existence and survival, 2) anything scarred or broken can be healed, and 3) healing begins from within.

Individual & Family Therapy
Kovu Healing provides short and long-term therapy based on the needs and requests of our clients. Our practice reflects upon the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Consulting Services
We provide consultation that addresses mental health issues through a cultural and trauma-informed lens. Engrained in this service is the distribution of resources and education to increase awareness and recognition of mental health and trauma symptoms.
Training
Kovu Healing provides mental health-related workshops and training opportunities to professional and community organizations including churches and private groups.

Metro: Our office is steps away from the Farragut West metro station – 17th St. exit (Orange, Blue, and Silver Lines), and the Farragut North (Red Line) metro station which is across the Farragut Square Park.
Driving: Metered parking is available on the streets surrounding the office outside of rush hours, and there are several garage parking options available for a fee.
